Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is defined by Psychology Today as “a seasonal mood disorder that usually erupts in October and November, when the days become shorter, and typically remits when spring approaches.”

 

Here are the common symptoms associated with SAD:

  • Being in a depressed mood nearly every day for most of the day
  • Experiencing a loss of interest in things that used to be interesting or enjoyable
  • Noticing changes in sleep patterns
  • Low than usual energy level
  • Having a difficult time with concentration and focus
  • Difficulty managing stress
  • Feeling anxious or irritable
  • An increased desire to be alone
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Having the desire for sunlight
  • Weight-gain

 

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact a mental health professional. Here are a few things you can do to help with SAD.

  • Light therapy
  • Increase the amount of time you spend outdoors
  • Go on a vacation to a sunny place
  • Eat a balanced diet
