Depression effects an estimated 350 million people worldwide but, although depression is challenging, it is manageable. With the right coping tools and treatment, you can manage your depression and take control of your life. Here is a list of strategies that you can use to help manage your depression.

  1. Know that depression is not a sign of weakness.
  2. Don’t be afraid to seek help. Too often, the stigma surrounding mental illness prevents people from getting the treatment they need.
  3. Don’t struggle in silence. Make sure that you have people who you can talk to, whether it be a friend, parent, a therapist, or support group.
  4. Be patient. Change is not immediate; it takes time and effort.
  5. Make a list of things that make you smile and hold onto it. This could consist of funny videos, songs you love, inspirational quotes, or a friend who makes you laugh. When you are feeling down, refer to this list to lift your spirits.
  6. Explore other types of treatments if traditional treatments aren’t working for you. Yoga, meditation, and other treatments can be very beneficial for those struggling with depression.
  7. Connect to the moment by engaging all of your senses. Being aware of what’s happening in the present moment can help you get out of your head and away from the negative thoughts.
  8. Participate in healthy activities that are fun or relaxing to you, such as gardening, drawing, or playing with a pet.
  9. Spend some time outside and in nature. This can improve your mood, reduce stress an anxiety, and give you energy.
  10. Write in a journal each night.
  11. Schedule your day so that you keep yourself occupied. Too much downtime allows for you to dwell on negative thoughts. So whether it’s volunteering or enrolling in a new class, make sure that your schedule keeps you involved in positive activities.
  12. Exercise regularly. This can boost your mood because exercising releases endorphins.
  13. Surround yourself with positive people. The people you hang around most have a huge impact on your life so make sure to surround yourself by people who are going to be a positive influence.
  14. Be compassionate towards yourself. Remember that you’re doing the best that you can.
