New York City Council members gathered last Thursday to hear the administration’s plan to improve mental health care but they did more than just that. Many council members shared their own personal stories about their struggles with addiction and mental health disorders. Chairman of the Council’s Health Committee Corey Johnson discussed his family’s history with alcohol and his six years of sobriety. Another members spoke of a family friend who died of opiate addiction. The first lady of New York City, Chirlane McCray, listened to these stories and gave testimony for her support of the city’s plan to improve mental health care. McCray said, “If we can’t talk about a problem, if we can’t acknowledge it, we can’t tell the stories and we can’t do anything about it. And that is one of the reasons why everywhere I go I encourage people to talk about their stories.”
